L.A. Smog

Downtown View of Los Angeles (thanks Melissa!). I experimented with this one when part way through I just decided to wipe the whole thing off with a tissue. MUCH better this way! What do you think?

Espresso maker

It's my stainless steel Espresso Maker I got from Ikea. Reflections, reflections, reflections. You might have to squint hard to make it out but I think it works.

Agave Sm & L

8x10 Large
6x8 Small

I did the Large 8x10 first and then decided to try again smaller to see if I would be any looser...They are practically indistinguishable so I think I'll need to keep working at it. Don't worry, Mom, I'm keeping my day job....!

Paper Bag

Again, thought this would be easy. Toughest part was trying to get the right 'paperbagbrown'. Then near the end I was getting tired (this followed right after the paper cup) and I quickly dashed out the shadow and crease marks. But in the end, I think the quickness makes it a lot better... not overwrought but nice and loose.

Paper Cup

Thought this would be easy to paint. Actually was harder than I thought because of its subtlety.

Chuck Taylors Converse

There's a red lining to these too. I may add later. This became a little too paint by numbers/color in the lines, I told my friend. Still I like them for the simple graphic element they have. Immediately recognizable...more like an iconic logo than a painting.

Happy Face Cup

My happy face cup that I got at the Pasadena Flea Market: It lights up my life. Wanted to document him forever in a painting. I've got a habit of breaking cups in the Sink.

Orange Safety Cone

Saw this kicking around the street for a few days on my regular dog walk. Nothing special until last week when I really noticed it for...wow! what a beauty I thought. I wonder if it's being thrown out (it was by the garbage cans) or someone was actually regularly using it. Should I take it? It's got such great color. Instead I took a photo and painted it. The other day we walk past and it was gone....darn!

Succulent XL

Like the Composition of this one better but it looks a bit lifeless in color...too grey! These succulents need more work but they are endlessly fascinating.

Succulent

Like the colors and light quality of this one...but it looks stiff and like a dead flower. Hmmm....

Lemon Slices in the Arctic

I titled this one Lemon Slices in the Arctic because of the snowy white background. It's not quite true to life but in the end I like the boldness of the colors. Truth be told, I cringed at it at first but in general, people seem to like this one a lot. I think it's true that people like color and though this composition is simple, it isolates the boldness of the color. Simple composition, simple color. It wasn't an easy one to do but I'm trying to keep these paintings to around 1 hour total time. In the end, I think I really like this one.

Motor Scooter

When I walk my dogs every morning, I pass by this Scooter. I've only seen someone tooling around in it once. It's one of my favorite things. That it just so happens to be surrounded by concrete made the composition even better. Once again, it's isolated on a serene background. In reality the painting is a little larger which I'll post a little later. Working on the reflections and highlights again on this one.

WaterPitcher

Here is the start of my Painting A Day project. I chose this for it's simplicity in both color and form. I really like how the reflections on the pitcher came out. In muted colors only, I was thinking of the great Giorgio Morandi or David Chipperfield's 'Tonale' table-top collection for Alessi. Morandi, however, differs in his greatness as well as his straight-on view of the object.

The other thing I notice is that even though this is an Oil on Canvas Board, I tend to retain my watercolor tendencies. So in the end I kind of like that it looks like a watercolor but is actually an Oil.
